Restoration of an urban river:Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, Japan

The Shinmachi River flows through the centre of Tokushima City and has been contaminated by dirty factories and domestics drains. The high pollution caused the death of the fish. However, by means of various projects carried out by the Prefecture and the City, it has been successfully cleaned and conformed into a beautiful landscape. Also, to keep the river water clean, the citizens established an organization called “Shinmachi kawa o mamoru kai”, organizing many activities for the preservation of the river.
