Proposed Sites for the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit

The 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit is set to be held in Japan in 2007, for the first time since the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Water Forum.

The Asia-Pacific Summit is an international conference in which heads of states or financial/planning ministers are expected to participate together with representatives from private sectors, civil societies, academics and media. We called for applications for a host city in Japan. It is because we expect the host city to play an important role in organizing public events to contribute to the public awareness raising. We sent out letters to prefectural governments, 12 major cities, and convention bureaus, calling for applications for a host city. To date, we have received 9 applications.

Proposed Sites:
Kisarazu City (Chiba); Shizuoka City; Gifu City: Niigata City; Kyoto Prefecture; Beppu City (Oita); Miyazaki Prefecture; Okinawa Prefecture; Kobe City

We are now in the midst of the first screening process, taking the following factors into consideration: support systems of local governments, local government-led initiatives that involve the public, and collaboration between local governments and citizens. We will decide on the host city after inspecting 4-5 candidate cities to be organized in the beginning of September.

The nominated city will be officially announced at the Launching Ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Water Summit to be held in September in Manila.
