Water Champion Wasan Jompakdee: Sharing Water
![]()
Dr. Wasan Jompakdee, Vice Dean of Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Engineering believes that IWRM is about the overall management of rivers, lakes, groundwater, and river basins.
A major challenge is getting all the stakeholders to participate and think collectively to ensure that everybody has adequate access to water. Participation, in itself, is complex; it is further complicated by the increasing diversity of water user groups. Water must be shared not only with farming communities but also with other sectors.

IWRM is the best operation for maintaining the water sources. There is no doubt. But how about the coordination of policy maker, administrator and operator.

Water financing and subsidies are necessary to improve access to clean water in rural area. I come from a small district in Cambodia, which had suffered alot from the lack of safe drinking water especially in the dry season. My family and others tried to dig smalls well close to the river to get clean water. We struggled to get just drops of safe drinking water. Every morning we woke up early to get water before others came. Such competition to get water created some conflicts. But now the situation is much better. We could get access to "machine water" as we call it from the local private company. Although the price is still expensive comparing with our living standard it helps us to a great extend. The water related diseases have been reduced and we dont need to compete for the drops of drinking water anymore. For this experience, I think the private sector plays an important role in providing safe drinking water to the local rural people. But it should have some kinds of subsidies and financial support from the government and international donor agencies to help those small private companies.
